1 Thing I Am Curious About

How do you build processes that do not engineer vulnerability out of the equation?

2 Quotes That I Am Thinking About

  1. "Vulnerability is the anchor of empathy, accountability, and trust."- Brené Brown

  2. "Effective processes embrace vulnerability, rather than engineering it out of the equation." - Brené Brown

The Pursuit of Efficiency

Did you say vulnerability? Who wants to talk about that?

Brené Brown once said that vulnerability is like a three-headed monster made up of uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure. In a world where efficiency is king, it's easy to forget the human touch.

You designed the best process ever and it just doesn’t work. Why?

You tried to engineer the human element (vulnerability) out of the equation.

By embracing vulnerability, we can build processes that let the monsters roam free and help us reach our full potential.

Here's how to do it:

  • Empathy and Inclusiveness: Think of your employees as people, not robots. They come in all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds, so make sure your processes account for that.

  • Positive Work Environment: A happy employee is a productive employee. So, give them recognition, opportunities to grow, and a healthy work-life balance.

  • Transparency and Accountability: No one likes a vague process. Make sure your employees know what's expected of them, and hold them accountable if they don't follow through.

  • Psychological Safety: Let your employees make mistakes, it's how they learn! Mistakes happen, be sure to embrace the teaching opportunities that follow.

  • Review and Adjust: Your processes are like wine, they get better with age. Regularly check in to make sure they're still relevant.

By embracing vulnerability in the workplace, you'll be able to let the three-headed monster run wild, and your employees will be able to reach their full potential.
