1 Thing I Am Curious About

What are clear strategies for creating opportunities for leadership development and growth within your team?

2 Quotes That I Am Thinking About

  1. “The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.” - Ralph Nader

  2. “A leader’s role is not to be the hero, but to empower others to become heroes.” - Tom Peters

Don’t Just Build a Team, Grow Leaders

Leaders? Where?

Have you ever stopped to ask yourself, “Where are the future leaders in my team?”

Like a gardener surveying their crop, finding no signs of ripening fruit, you too might be wondering why the seeds of leadership are not sprouting within your team. It’s a pain point that leaves us bewildered and quite frankly, a bit frustrated.

Think about it. You’ve hired the best talent, invested in training, yet you find your team members shying away from leadership roles.

Why is that?

It’s Not Them. It’s Us.

You might blame it on the individuals. Maybe they lack ambition or drive? But have we considered the possibility that maybe we’re looking at the problem from the wrong angle?

Rather than asking why individuals aren’t stepping up, we need to be asking: are we creating the right environment and opportunities for leadership development?

Numbers Don’t Lie

Research shows that organizations which foster leadership development are 2.3 times more likely to outperform their competition. Teams with ongoing leadership growth opportunities report 18% higher productivity. Still not convinced? Firms emphasizing leadership development see an 86% increase in their employee engagement levels.

The numbers speak loud and clear - growing leaders within your team isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s a game-changer.

Building a Ladder, Not a Ceiling

So, how do we turn our teams into greenhouses for growing leaders? Here are some practical, hands-on tips:

• Create a Culture of Learning: Encourage a mindset where mistakes aren’t failures, but opportunities for growth.

• Delegate Authority, Not Just Tasks: Let your team members make decisions. Their choices might surprise you.

• Provide Mentorship and Coaching: Personal, one-on-one attention is a powerful catalyst for growth.

• Encourage Cross-Functional Projects: There’s a leader within us for different situations. Let’s discover them.

• Recognition: Celebrate small wins, and recognize those who lead by example.

In essence, we should be building ladders for our team members to climb, rather than ceilings that limit their growth.

The Unspoken Truth

Many of us talk about growing leaders, but few are willing to make the necessary changes to foster such growth. We need to step out of the comfort of the status quo and embrace a new approach to leadership development.

Is it challenging? Absolutely. But the rewards are tenfold - not just for your team, but for the entire organization.

Tomorrow’s Leaders are on Your Team Today

The fact is, the leaders of tomorrow are in your team today, waiting for the right opportunities to grow, develop and lead. It’s about time we recognize this untapped potential and create the right conditions for their growth.

After all, the future of our organizations doesn’t just depend on the leaders of today, but on the leaders we grow for tomorrow.
